The Maharashtra government has initiated an aggressive statewide campaign to halt the illegal transport and slaughter of cows, ordering stringent action against smugglers to protect animal welfare and cultural sentiments
MUMBAI | May 25, 2026 : Ahead of the upcoming Bakrid festival, the Maharashtra state government has adopted a highly aggressive and uncompromising stance against the illegal transportation of cows, unauthorized slaughterhouses, and the inhumane treatment of livestock. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik delivered a stern warning, categorically stating that the smuggling and slaughter of the revered cow will not be tolerated under any circumstances within the state.

Following explicit directives from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the State Transport Department has mandated a comprehensive, statewide special inspection campaign. All Regional Transport Officers, Deputy Regional Transport Officers, border checkpost officials, and the broader traffic enforcement machinery have been instructed to execute rigorous enforcement operations between May 25 and May 28, 2026. This coordinated effort aims to dismantle smuggling networks that typically increase their illicit activities during specific festive seasons.

Minister Sarnaik emphasized that the cow is not only an animal but a profound symbol of faith and cultural reverence for millions of citizens. He highlighted the brutal methods employed by smugglers, who often cram the cattle into confined spaces without food or water, subjecting them to severe cruelty during transit. The state apparatus is now fully mobilized to intercept these illegal shipments and ensure that offenders face the harshest legal consequences.

The specialized task forces deployed at state borders will meticulously inspect cargo vehicles, ensuring no livestock is transported without valid permits or in violation of animal welfare regulations. This decisive intervention underscores the administration’s commitment to upholding the law, preserving cultural values, and ending the systemic cruelty inflicted upon livestock by organized smuggling rings operating across Maharashtra.
