Unseasonal rains have disrupted harvesting, reducing vegetable arrivals at Pune Market Yard, while sluggish consumer demand has triggered a ten to twenty percent drop in flat bean prices.

PUNE | May 25, 2026 : Unseasonal rainfall across the Pune division has significantly disrupted agricultural harvesting schedules, causing a notable decline in fresh fruit and vegetable arrivals at the Pune Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC). Market traders reported that only 90 trucks and tempos loaded with diverse agricultural produce arrived at the vegetable section on Sunday. This marks a clear decrease of approximately ten trucks compared to the previous week’s influx, reflecting the immediate impact of erratic weather on regional farm logistics.

Despite the reduced market inflow, overall trading sentiment remained heavily muted due to weak retail demand. This sluggish consumer appetite caused a 10 to 20 percent drop in the wholesale prices of flat beans (ghevda). Conversely, balanced demand sustained the lower supply for most other major commodities, keeping the wholesale rates of remaining vegetables relatively stable. Major out-of-state shipments included green chillies from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, carrots from Indore, and premium green peas from Himachal Pradesh, alongside 40 trucks of potatoes arriving from Indore, Gujarat, and local farming pockets.

Meanwhile, the leafy greens segment witnessed contrasting price trends driven by acute summer water scarcity and fluctuating regional supply chains. Severe heatwaves have constrained local cultivation, forcing wholesale prices for dill leaves (shepu) and green onion stalks to jump significantly due to high demand. However, a massive influx of coriander and fenugreek (methi) from Madhya Pradesh and neighboring districts thoroughly stabilized the market. Fenugreek arrivals doubled from last week’s average, recording nearly two lakh bunches this Sunday alone. This heavy supply surge pulled down the wholesale rates for coriander, rajgira, and ambadi, offering vital relief to retail consumers navigating volatile seasonal food prices.
