Maharashtra Traffic Police Launch Camera-Based Speed Enforcement Pilot on Mumbai – Nashik Highway

Mumbai - Nashik Highway
Maharashtra Traffic Police has introduced a camera-based speed enforcement pilot on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway to curb violations, enhance monitoring, and improve road safety through automated surveillance and stricter penalties.

May 1, 2026 | Mumbai: In a significant move to strengthen road safety measures, the Maharashtra Traffic Police has rolled out a pilot project deploying advanced camera-based speed enforcement systems along the busy Mumbai–Nashik Highway. The initiative aims to deter speeding violations and improve compliance with traffic regulations on one of the state’s most accident-prone corridors.
Officials said the system uses high-resolution cameras and automated number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to detect vehicles exceeding speed limits in real time. Once a violation is recorded, an e-challan is generated and sent directly to the vehicle owner, reducing the need for manual intervention and enhancing transparency in enforcement.
The Mumbai–Nashik Highway, a crucial arterial route connecting the financial capital with northern Maharashtra, witnesses heavy vehicular movement daily, including commercial transport and passenger traffic. Authorities have identified overspeeding as a major contributor to accidents on this stretch, prompting the adoption of technology-driven monitoring solutions.
According to officials, the pilot project will be closely monitored over the coming months to assess its effectiveness in reducing violations and improving driver behaviour. If successful, similar systems could be expanded to other highways and urban roads across the state.

Road safety experts have welcomed the initiative, noting that automated enforcement not only ensures consistent monitoring but also minimizes human error and potential disputes. The move aligns with broader efforts to integrate smart technologies into traffic management and create safer road environments.
The authorities have urged motorists to adhere to prescribed speed limits and traffic rules, warning that strict penalties will be imposed on violators. The deployment marks a step forward in leveraging technology to tackle road safety challenges and promote responsible driving practices across Maharashtra.
