Maharashtra Launches Digital Census With Self-Enumeration Option From May 1

Maharashtra Census
Maharashtra has begun its census process from Maharashtra Day, marking the state’s first-ever digital census. Citizens can now choose a “self-enumeration” facility, allowing them to fill in census details directly through a mobile app or official portal.

May 1, 2026 | Mumbai: The census drive in Maharashtra officially commenced on Thursday with the first phase focusing on housing census and preparation of household listings. Chief Census Officer Niroopama Dange urged citizens to actively participate, stating that the new digital system will ensure better data accuracy and reduce the time required for collection.
In a major shift, the census will be conducted digitally for the first time, and residents have been given an optional self-enumeration facility. Under this system, any member of a household can complete the process within 15 to 20 minutes using a smartphone. The self-enumeration window will remain open from May 1 to May 15.
The dedicated portal will be active during this period, allowing citizens to submit information through https://se.census.gov.in as well as through a mobile application available on Play Store and App Store. A total of 33 questions will be asked during the self-enumeration process. After submission, a Self Enumeration ID (SEID) will be sent to the registered mobile number or email address. Officials clarified that no document uploads are required.
The second phase of the census process will be conducted between May 16 and June 14, during which door-to-door household listing and housing census will be carried out by trained enumerators.

Authorities stated that strict data protection measures have been built into the system. A three-layer security framework has been introduced, with access restricted only to authorised officials through password and OTP verification. All information will be stored in encrypted format.
This census is being described as India’s eighth census exercise. Officials also confirmed that caste-based enumeration will be carried out, while detailed notifications regarding the next stage of population enumeration will be issued by the Central Government after completion of the first phase. To support the operation, over 2.64 lakh enumerators and supervisors are being trained across Maharashtra.
