Despite arriving in Maharashtra a day ahead of schedule, the southwest monsoon has slowed significantly, raising concerns over drought-like conditions across large parts of the state. According to weather assessments and state officials, nearly 181 talukas are facing the risk of severe water scarcity due to delayed and uneven rainfall distribution.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, while addressing the media in Nagpur on Sunday, appealed to farmers not to hurry with sowing operations based on isolated pre-monsoon showers or weather rumours. He warned that rainfall activity is expected to remain weak until at least June 15, particularly across Marathwada, western Maharashtra, and parts of central Maharashtra.
Meteorological forecasts indicate that the monsoon has currently stalled over the southern Konkan region after making initial progress. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas of Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts over the next few days, but widespread rainfall across the state is unlikely in the immediate future.
Agricultural experts have cautioned that premature sowing could lead to crop losses if dry conditions persist after initial rainfall. Officials said current weather models suggest that the monsoon’s stronger phase may only begin after June 17.

An assessment based on advanced forecasting systems has indicated that drought pressure may intensify in several regions if rainfall remains below normal. Authorities have also warned citizens to remain alert during thunderstorms and avoid sheltering under trees, electric poles, or transformers during lightning activity.
Meanwhile, water levels in reservoirs across parts of the state continue to remain under pressure due to high summer demand and insufficient replenishment. Farmers are being advised to closely monitor official weather updates before taking major agricultural decisions during the early monsoon phase.
