April 14, 2026 | Lonavala :The project, which forms part of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway corridor, introduces a new 13.3 km alignment that bypasses the challenging Khandala Lonavala ghat section. Officials said the new route will help reduce congestion, especially during monsoon months when landslides and traffic delays are common. A key highlight of the project is the installation of advanced artificial intelligence-based safety systems inside the tunnels. These systems are designed to provide real-time monitoring, detect hazards automatically, and support faster emergency response in case of accidents or disruptions.

According to project details, the infrastructure has been developed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation at an estimated cost of ₹6,600 to ₹6,700 crore. The Missing Link includes multiple engineering structures, including two major tunnels measuring approximately 2.75 km and 8 km, making it one of the most technologically advanced highway sections in the country. The new alignment is expected to offer smoother and faster travel between Mumbai and Pune by eliminating the need to pass through the steep and accident-prone ghat section. Authorities believe the project will significantly reduce travel time while enhancing commuter safety and traffic efficiency.

Engineers involved in the project said the expressway upgrade has been designed as an eight-lane high-speed corridor with modern ventilation, surveillance, and emergency management systems. The tunnels also feature AI-enabled monitoring for continuous safety assessment and automated alerts. Once operational, the Missing Link is expected to ease pressure on the existing ghat route, improve logistics movement, and boost tourism and business connectivity between Mumbai and Pune. Officials added that final finishing and safety checks are underway before opening the route to the public in May.
