Pune | May 13: The National Defence Academy has developed a massive urban forest within its campus in collaboration with the SayTrees Environmental Trust, marking a significant step towards environmental conservation and ecological restoration in Pune. The initiative has led to the plantation of nearly 23,000 saplings across approximately 1,23,785 square feet of land inside the academy premises.

The project has been implemented using the Japanese Miyawaki afforestation technique, a scientifically designed method known for creating dense, fast-growing native forests in compact urban spaces. Officials said the initiative aims to improve biodiversity, strengthen the local ecosystem, and contribute to long-term climate resilience within institutional spaces.

Senior officials of the academy, including NDA Commandant Vice Admiral Anil Jaggi, attended the launch of the project and highlighted the importance of environmental responsibility and sustainability within defence institutions. The initiative is also expected to improve the local microclimate and promote ecological awareness among cadets and staff members.

Representatives of SayTrees Environmental Trust stated that the urban forest is intended to serve as a living example of sustainable development and biodiversity conservation. The organisation has been involved in several ecological restoration projects across India and has reportedly planted more than one crore trees while developing over 150 urban forests nationwide.

Environmental experts believe projects such as these are increasingly important for rapidly urbanising cities like Pune, where green cover has been under pressure due to infrastructure expansion and rising population density. The forest developed at the NDA campus is expected to support native plant species, improve air quality, and provide a healthier environment within the region.

The initiative has received appreciation from environmental groups and citizens, with many viewing it as a model for large institutions and public organisations to adopt sustainable and climate-conscious development practices in urban areas.
