The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has assured citizens that the ambitious road improvement project planned ahead of the Pune Grand Tour International Cycling Event will be executed without compromising on quality, while also delivering long-term benefits for daily commuters across the city.
The civic body is preparing to undertake extensive road repairs and resurfacing work as part of the infrastructure development required for the international cycling event. Officials have confirmed that the tendering process for the project will commence shortly. To ensure accountability, uniform standards and timely execution, each work package will be entrusted to a single contractor rather than being divided among multiple agencies.
The road improvement initiative is estimated to cost ₹167 crore and forms a significant component of PMC’s broader strategy to modernize Pune’s urban infrastructure. Civic officials said the upgraded roads are being designed to meet international standards required for competitive cycling events while also addressing long-standing concerns over road quality and commuter convenience.
Apart from facilitating the successful organisation of the Pune Grand Tour, the upgraded road network is expected to improve traffic movement across several major corridors in the city. Authorities believe smoother road surfaces will help reduce travel time, improve driving conditions, enhance road safety and provide a more efficient transport experience for thousands of motorists who use these routes every day.
The project is also expected to strengthen Pune’s position as a destination capable of hosting international sporting events while creating durable civic infrastructure that benefits residents long after the competition concludes.

PMC officials reiterated that maintaining construction quality remains a top priority throughout the execution of the project. They stated that strict monitoring mechanisms and defined contractor responsibilities will be implemented to ensure the work meets prescribed standards and is completed within the stipulated timeline.
With work expected to begin soon, the road upgrade programme represents one of the city’s major infrastructure initiatives aimed at balancing international event preparedness with long-term urban mobility improvements.
