PMC Moves to Dismiss Sanitation Workers Absent from Duty for Over Five Years
Pune Municipal Corporation has directed officials to prepare dismissal proposals for sanitation workers absent for over five years and review road-sweeping operations.
PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated steps to dismiss permanent sanitation workers who have allegedly remained absent from duty for more than five years, as part of a wider drive to improve the city’s cleanliness and strengthen accountability in solid waste management.
The directions were issued during a review meeting on solid waste management held on October 6, 2026. Officials from all 15 ward offices were instructed to prepare dismissal proposals for employees who have been continuously absent for over five years.
PMC Reviews Road-Sweeping Operations
The civic body also reviewed its three-month pilot project for performance-based road sweeping, which is being implemented across all 15 ward offices.
Under the system, each sweeping beat covers a stretch of approximately 700 metres, with the number of sanitation workers assigned according to the area. During the review, officials found that some designated stretches included internal roads within large residential societies, including private roads that may not need to be covered under the civic cleaning plan.
The administration has directed ward offices to reassess these stretches, reduce the designated areas wherever necessary and submit revised details to PMC headquarters within five days.
Underutilised Staff to Be Redeployed
The PMC has also instructed officials to ensure that permanent sanitation workers whose sweeping workload has reduced under the new system are not left underutilised. Such employees are to be assigned other public sanitation duties based on requirements.
The administration aims to make more efficient use of the available workforce while improving the quality of street cleaning across the city.
Plastic Violations and Cantonment Cleanliness Under Review
Officials were also directed to intensify action against violations of plastic-use regulations and ensure that fines and other penalties are imposed effectively.
Cleanliness in areas under the Pune Cantonment Board also came under discussion, following repeated complaints about inadequate sanitation. The civic administration has asked officials to examine the situation and identify suitable measures to improve cleanliness in these areas.
The measures form part of the PMC’s broader efforts to improve sanitation standards, address staffing issues and ensure more effective use of public resources.
