May 8, 2026 | Pune To provide long-awaited relief to residents battling deteriorating air quality, the District Administration has initiated a decisive crackdown on Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) plants. District Collector Jitendra Budhi has finalized a policy to move these projects beyond city boundaries within a six-month timeframe, a decision corroborated by Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram. The move comes as a response to the growing environmental concerns and health hazards caused by the heavy dust emissions and logistical congestion associated with these industrial units.

The administration is set to release a comprehensive new regulatory framework within the next 15 days to oversee this transition. This policy will not only dictate the relocation process but also strictly target unauthorized plants currently operating within residential and commercial zones. Under the new guidelines, any RMC plant found lacking the necessary environmental clearances or operating in violation of zoning laws will have its operations terminated immediately. The objective is to eliminate the presence of illegal projects that have significantly contributed to the city’s “dust bowl” reputation.

Furthermore, for the remaining duration that these plants stay within the city, strict operational “time slots” will be enforced to minimize their impact on daily life and traffic. The authorities have made it clear that no extensions will be granted beyond the six-month deadline. Despite potential pushback or strike threats from project operators, the administration remains firm on its stance, prioritizing public health over industrial convenience. This systemic “reset” is expected to drastically reduce suspended particulate matter in Pune’s atmosphere, marking a significant victory for local environmental activists and citizens alike.
