Pune sees rising opposition to relocating the historic Sant Palkhi halt, with devotees urging authorities to preserve tradition while the state government assures action and plans infrastructure improvements.

April 16 | Pune: A long-standing religious tradition in Pune has come into focus as demands intensify to retain the historic Sant Palkhi halt at Bhavani Peth’s Vitthal temple. The halt, followed for nearly 350 years, is considered an integral part of the revered palkhi procession associated with Maharashtra’s spiritual heritage. The issue was raised by PMC corporator Vishal Dhanawade, who has urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to intervene and halt the proposed relocation of the traditional stop. Dhanawade emphasized that the site holds deep cultural and religious significance for devotees and should not be altered.
Residents and devotees have also voiced strong opposition to the proposed shift, stating that the halt is not merely a logistical stop but a symbol of continuity in the Sant palkhi tradition. Many believe that relocating it could hurt religious sentiments and disrupt a practice that has been preserved for generations. Responding to the concerns, Chief Minister Fadnavis has assured that appropriate steps will be taken, with a focus on respecting the sentiments of devotees while ensuring the smooth conduct of the procession.
At the same time, authorities have outlined a series of infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing facilities and managing crowds more effectively. Plans include the expansion of the temple premises by acquiring adjacent land, removal of unauthorized structures along the palkhi route within eight days, and widening of the entrance, expected to be completed within approximately 45 days.

In addition, measures such as separate queues for darshan and improved arrangements for key rituals like paduka abhishek are being considered. Provisions for covered mandaps, electricity, 24×7 water supply, sanitation, and accommodation for trustees, volunteers, and dindi groups are also part of the proposed plan. The development highlights the delicate balance between preserving tradition and upgrading infrastructure for one of Maharashtra’s most significant religious events.
