Senior researchers at a Pune event said distorted narratives about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj still persist. The newly released book by Saurabh Karde aims to counter misconceptions with evidence-based history
Pune | 08 December 2025: A literary event in Pune highlighted the growing need to correct long-standing misconceptions about Chhatrapati Shivaji-era history. Speaking at the launch of Saurabh Karde’s new book, senior history researcher Pandurang Balkawade said that distorted narratives introduced during the British era continue to influence public understanding even after 150 years. He noted that these outdated interpretations still shape how many perceive Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, making historical correction essential.

The book, titled Shivkalin Itihas: Gairsamaj Ani Vastav, has been published by Snehal Prakashan. During the event, He added that several misconceptions about the Maratha period remain popular despite extensive research disproving them.

The programme was attended by noted scholar Dr. G. B. Deglurkar, senior fort researcher Prof. P. K. Ghanekar, Shivshambhu Vichar Manch convener Sudhir Thorat and publisher Ravindra Ghatpande.

At the same event, a new ‘Itihas Prabodhan Samiti’ was announced. The committee aims to counter false historical narratives and promote evidence-based knowledge. Its logo was also unveiled.

Author Saurabh Karde said several misleading stories about the Chhatrapati Shivaji era have been deliberately propagated, ranging from misconceptions about the Maharaj’s guru to exaggerated tales like wielding a 65-kg sword. His 75-page book includes over 75 citations and more than 30 photographs. He said the publication is intended to guide young readers toward a factual, research-backed understanding of Maratha history.
