Pune PhD scholar dies by suicide after alleged harassment by her research guide; police arrest BSI scientist. Investigation highlights academic accountability.

Pune – April 14, 2026: A tragic incident in Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune has raised serious concerns about academic safety after a 30-year-old PhD scholar in Botany died by suicide on April 11, 2026, allegedly following prolonged mental and inappropriate harassment by her research guide, a senior scientist associated with the Botanical Survey of India. The scholar, who had been pursuing her doctoral research since August 2025 under the supervision of the accused at the BSI’s Koregaon Park office, reportedly endured months of distress linked to the guide’s conduct. According to police findings, the situation escalated to such an extent that on April 9, the guide allegedly issued a written apology on stamp paper acknowledging inappropriate behaviour, a document now part of the investigation record.

Despite this, the scholar’s emotional turmoil continued, and she was later found dead at her residence, where a suicide note was recovered citing sustained harassment and misconduct. Following a complaint lodged by the victim’s father, the Bhosari MIDC Police registered an FIR under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to abetment of suicide and assault with intent to outrage modesty, and arrested the accused, who has been remanded to judicial custody. Investigators stated that preliminary evidence, including the note and prior written communication, indicates the scholar felt cornered by the persistent mental pressure allegedly exerted by her mentor. The case has triggered widespread debate within academic and research circles about the power imbalance between supervisors and scholars, the lack of effective grievance redressal systems, and the urgent need for stronger institutional safeguards for research students.

Mental health experts point out that doctoral scholars often work in isolated, high-pressure environments where conflicts with supervisors can severely affect psychological well-being, especially when institutional support mechanisms are weak or inaccessible. Student groups and academicians are now demanding mandatory oversight, mentor accountability policies, and accessible counselling systems within universities and research institutes to prevent similar tragedies. As the investigation progresses, authorities are examining correspondence, statements, and institutional protocols to determine the full extent of responsibility, while the incident serves as a grim reminder that academic excellence cannot come at the cost of student safety and dignity.
