Experts warn that excessive screen use is disrupting sleep, increasing brain stress, and causing behavioural changes, potentially raising the risk of memory loss and early signs of dementia among young and middle-aged individuals.

Kolhapur | April 16, 2026: The growing dependence on smartphones, tablets, and other digital devices is raising alarm among health experts, who warn that excessive screen exposure may have long-term consequences on brain health, including an increased risk of Dementia.

Medical professionals point out that continuous scrolling and prolonged screen engagement are not only affecting attention spans but also interfering with critical biological processes. One of the major concerns is the disruption of Melatonin production, a hormone responsible for regulating sleep cycles. Reduced melatonin levels due to screen exposure, especially before bedtime, lead to disturbed sleep patterns.

Experts emphasize that sleep plays a crucial role in memory consolidation-the process by which the brain stores and organizes information. Chronic sleep deprivation weakens this process, resulting in forgetfulness, reduced concentration, and gradual cognitive decline.

According to mental health specialists, the problem is particularly noticeable among younger and middle-aged individuals, where screen addiction is rapidly increasing. Continuous digital stimulation affects the brain’s reward system, especially the Dopamine pathway, leading to behavior patterns similar to addiction. This reduces the ability to focus and increases dependency on digital devices.

Doctors have also observed behavioral changes linked to excessive screen use, including irritability, restlessness, lack of concentration, and emotional instability. In some cases, individuals show early signs of memory impairment, which, if ignored, could progress into more serious neurological conditions over time.

Prolonged screen exposure is also associated with increased stress on brain cells and potential Neuroinflammation, a condition linked to various neurodegenerative disorders. Experts warn that sustained exposure to such stressors may contribute to long-term damage, including the development of dementia-related symptoms.

Dr. Venkatesh Powar, a psychiatrist from Kolhapur, noted that cases of behavioral disturbances and cognitive issues linked to screen overuse are becoming increasingly common. He highlighted that early warning signs such as frequent forgetfulness, difficulty in decision-making, and emotional imbalance should not be ignored.

Health professionals stress that while avoiding screens entirely may not be practical, regulating their use is essential. They recommend avoiding screen exposure at least one to two hours before bedtime to improve sleep quality. Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and incorporating daily digital detox periods can significantly reduce mental fatigue.

Experts also advise individuals to remain alert to subtle behavioral and cognitive changes and seek timely intervention if needed. Early awareness and preventive measures can play a crucial role in reducing the long-term risks associated with excessive screen usage.

As digital devices continue to dominate daily life, the need for balanced usage and conscious habits has become critical to safeguarding mental well-being and cognitive health.
