The Shirala Taluka Agriculture Department has officially unveiled a comprehensive contingency crop plan based on recommendations from agricultural universities, advising regional farmers to delay sowing operations until the area receives adequate cumulative rainfall

SHIRALA| May 23, 2026 : In response to increasingly erratic weather patterns, Taluka Agriculture Officer Kiran Pawar announced a strategic agricultural emergency blueprint focused on minimizing financial risks for local cultivators. The department has explicitly warned farmers against premature sowing, advising them to initiate the process only after their specific micro-regions register at least 80 mm to 100 mm of steady rainfall to ensure proper seed germination and soil moisture retention.

To insulate agricultural yields from climate vulnerabilities, the civic advisory strongly advocates for the widespread adoption of intercropping methodologies rather than relying on mono-crop cultivation. A major component of the plan includes targeted recommendations from the Regional Rice Research Station, categorizing specialized paddy varieties based on varying maturity cycles to match different rainfall trends. For shorter windows of 90 to 105 days, varieties like Ratnagiri-73, Terna, and Karjat-184 are recommended, while Ratnagiri-1, Tuljapur-1, Karjat-4, Shindewadi ER-1, Panvel-2, Sahyadri-2, and improved Ambemohar are suggested for mid-early cycles of 116 to 120 days.

For standard cycles spanning 121 to 135 days, the department recommends Karjat-5, Phule Radha, Kundalika, Sahyadri-1, Sahyadri-3, Panvel-1, and PKV Ganesh. Long-duration crops exceeding 136 days should utilize Warna, Ratnagiri-3, Indrayani, Karjat-2, PKV Makarand, and Shindewadi-75. By systematically matching seed selection with historical climate data and current monsoon trajectories, the administration aims to optimize agricultural output while buffering rural communities against sudden dry spells.
