Even before its theatrical release, Shraddha Kapoor-starrer Eetha has found itself at the center of a public controversy. The film, based on the life of legendary Lavani and Tamasha artist Vithabai Narayangaonkar, has drawn objections from the cultural wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which has questioned the use of the title Eetha and urged the makers to reconsider it.
The issue surfaced shortly after the film’s teaser was officially unveiled. While the teaser received praise for Shraddha Kapoor’s transformation into the iconic folk artist, political and cultural representatives raised concerns that the title does not adequately reflect the stature and legacy of Vithabai Narayangaonkar. According to reports, a memorandum has been submitted to the filmmakers seeking a title change, with party representatives warning that the current name could hurt public sentiments associated with the celebrated performer.
Directed by filmmaker Laxman Utekar and produced by Maddock Films, Eetha chronicles the life and struggles of Vithabai Narayangaonkar, one of Maharashtra’s most respected Lavani artists. The film stars Shraddha Kapoor in the lead role, alongside Randeep Hooda in a pivotal character. The teaser recently generated significant attention online, with audiences appreciating the film’s visual scale and Kapoor’s dramatic makeover.

Despite the growing debate over its title, the makers have not yet issued an official response regarding the demand for a change. Industry observers believe the controversy could further increase public interest in the project as its release date approaches.
Scheduled to release on August 28, 2026, the film is expected to shine a national spotlight on Maharashtra’s rich folk-art traditions while bringing the remarkable story of Vithabai Narayangaonkar to a wider audience.
