The Maharashtra Social Welfare Department has provisioned a dedicated fund of ₹10 crore to install commercial water purifiers across all state-run government hostels and residential schools.
May 18, 2026 | Pune: In a significant move aimed at improving the health and living standards of marginalized students, the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Maharashtra, has officially sanctioned a ₹10 crore budget for the installation of water purifiers in all state-run hostels and residential schools. The directive follows a series of formal grievances raised by residing students regarding the non-availability of clean, filtered drinking water across various state institutional campuses.

The social welfare wing currently manages an expansive network of 449 government hostels alongside approximately 92 to 100 specialized residential schools tailored to foster the socio-educational advancement of underprivileged boys and girls. Administratively, the state hostels house a combined strength of 46,673 students, while the residential schools support an additional capacity of 14,600 pupils. Under standard state provisions, these scholars are provided with free boarding, meals, healthcare check-ups, sports equipment, academic supplies, and monthly maintenance allowances.

This fresh infrastructural push expands upon previous student welfare initiatives rolled out over the past calendar year, which included the installation of commercial washing machines and institutional water heating systems to guarantee hot water access for daily hygiene. Given that access to uncontaminated water remained a crucial missing link, the department expedited the financial clearance to bridge the public utility gap. Procurement and installation operations are scheduled to commence immediately to ensure comprehensive filtration coverage across both male and female wings before the start of the upcoming academic terms.
