Beijing | May 15, 2026 : US President Donald Trump has triggered fresh political debate after publicly agreeing with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s remarks describing the United States as a “declining nation,” while insisting the decline occurred during former President Joe Biden’s administration.

The statement came during Trump’s ongoing high-profile visit to Beijing, where he is holding summit talks with Xi Jinping amid growing global tensions surrounding trade, Taiwan and the Iran conflict. According to reports, Xi referred to the United States as a nation facing decline during discussions linked to the broader geopolitical rivalry between Washington and Beijing.

Responding on his Truth Social platform, Trump said Xi was “100 percent correct” in describing America’s condition during Biden’s presidency. Trump accused the previous administration of weakening the country through issues including inflation, border policies, crime, trade agreements and social policies.

However, Trump argued that the United States has undergone a dramatic turnaround since his return to office. He claimed the country has become “the hottest nation anywhere in the world,” highlighting strong stock markets, increased foreign investment, military strength and employment growth during the first 16 months of his administration.

The remarks came as Trump and Xi held crucial discussions in Beijing focused on trade relations, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, rare earth exports and the ongoing Iran war. Xi also reportedly warned against mishandling Taiwan, cautioning that tensions over the island could potentially trigger broader conflict between the two superpowers.

Analysts believe the exchange reflects the increasingly complex relationship between the United States and China, where economic cooperation continues alongside growing geopolitical rivalry. Xi has repeatedly promoted the idea that “the East is rising while the West is declining,” a phrase often interpreted as China’s confidence in its growing global influence.

Despite sharp rhetoric, both leaders publicly projected optimism about future relations. Trump expressed hope that ties between Washington and Beijing could become “stronger and better than ever before” following the summit.
