Algae vs. Pollution: Bhopal Unveils India’s First ‘Algae Tree’ to Combat Urban Smog

Bhopal
In a revolutionary move against air pollution, Bhopal has installed India’s first “Algae Tree,” a solar-powered biotech device capable of absorbing 1.5 tons of CO2 annually while releasing pure oxygen.
May 14, 2026 | Bhopal: As urban centers grapple with deteriorating air quality, the Mushroom World Group in Bhopal has introduced a groundbreaking solution: the “Algae Tree.” This innovative bio-technological device, developed after two years of intensive research by a team of over 50 experts, functions as a high-capacity air purifier using living micro-algae. Though it bears the name “tree,” the unit is actually a sophisticated glass structure filled with specialized algae that mimics the natural process of photosynthesis at an accelerated rate.

The efficiency of this single installation is staggering, possessing the carbon-scrubbing power of approximately 25 mature, broad-leaved trees. Strategically placed in Bhopal’s Swami Vivekananda Park, the unit was recently inaugurated by Cabinet Minister Vishwas Sarang. Beyond just managing greenhouse gases, the device is engineered to tackle immediate health hazards in crowded urban zones. It is capable of reducing PM 2.5 the fine particulate matter that penetrates deep into human lungs by 45% to 55% within a 15-meter radius.
Operating entirely on renewable energy, the “Algae Tree” features integrated solar panels that power its internal sensors and circulation pumps. It draws in polluted air, which is then processed by the micro-algae to trap pollutants and generate nearly one ton of fresh oxygen every year. While city officials emphasize that this technology is intended to complement, rather than replace, natural forestry, it offers a vital alternative for congested metropolitan areas where traditional plantation is physically impossible due to infrastructure constraints.

This “Smart Device” represents a significant leap in India’s green technology sector. By combining biotechnology with solar power, Bhopal is setting a precedent for other Indian cities to follow in the fight against industrial and vehicular emissions. As the first of its kind in the country, the success of this project could signal a new era of “living machines” integrated into the urban landscape to ensure breathable air for future generations.
