April 22, 2026 | San Francisco: Meta has officially confirmed that it is testing a new premium subscription tier for its messaging platform, called WhatsApp Plus, marking a significant shift in its long-standing free-to-use model. The feature is currently being rolled out to a limited number of beta testers, primarily on Android devices, with a wider release expected in the future.

The upcoming subscription is designed to enhance user experience through advanced personalisation tools rather than altering core messaging functionality. According to early reports, WhatsApp Plus will allow users to customise app icons, themes, and ringtones, along with offering additional chat management features.

Among the key highlights, users may be able to pin up to 20 chats, significantly higher than the existing limit, and access exclusive stickers and premium notification tones. The core features of WhatsApp, including messaging, voice calls, and end-to-end encryption, will continue to remain free for all users. While Meta has not officially confirmed pricing, reports suggest that the subscription could be introduced at an affordable rate. Estimates indicate a monthly cost of around €2.49 in Europe, with variations expected across different regions.

The move aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to diversify revenue streams beyond advertising by introducing optional paid features across its platforms. Similar subscription-based offerings are already being tested on Instagram, indicating a wider push towards premium user experiences.

Despite the introduction of paid features, the company has emphasized that WhatsApp’s essential services will remain free, ensuring accessibility for its billions of global users while offering additional value for those willing to pay.
