According to official data referenced in the announcement, the Mumbai area recorded 15,626 deaths on railway tracks between 2014 and 2024 — highlighting the urgency of the issue. MRVM’s chairman said the investment will target sections where unauthorized crossings and overcrowding were common. “We expect this to bring down accidental deaths substantially,” he stated. The upgrade programme will be coordinated with the Ministry of Railways and the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation, with priority given to high-risk corridors.

In addition to infrastructure, public awareness campaigns focusing on track safety and responsible commuting are also planned. Railway officials hope that with the ₹551-crore allocation, the suburban network will become markedly safer for the daily lakhs of commuters.
