Pune PMC to issue tender for sixth stretch of Mutha River improvement project. The ₹450 crore plan aims to widen the river channel, build retaining walls, and prevent flooding in Ekta Nagari and Sinhagad Road areas.

Pune, October 30, 2025 — The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is preparing to invite tenders for the sixth stretch of the Mutha River bank improvement project, aimed at reducing flooding in areas like Ekta Nagari and Sinhagad Road. This section, covering nearly 8.2 kilometres from Rajaram Bridge to the Shivne Haddipul area, is one of the most flood-prone zones in the city and has faced repeated waterlogging during heavy monsoons.

The project is part of the broader river rejuvenation plan designed to strengthen embankments and improve the flow capacity of the river. Officials said the existing river channel, which is about 30 metres wide, will be expanded to nearly 90 metres. This expansion will allow higher water discharge during peak rains, preventing overflow into residential areas. A retaining wall will also be constructed along vulnerable sections to provide added protection.

PMC engineers have proposed a modern drainage and duct system to channel rainwater efficiently and reduce the risk of backflow into nearby colonies. Where space allows, the plan includes developing 12-metre-wide pedestrian and cycling paths along the banks to promote safe and accessible riverfront spaces for residents. The designs are based on a 100-year flood study and incorporate long-term sustainability measures.

The estimated cost of the project has been revised to around ₹450 crore, up from the earlier ₹300 crore due to additional flood-control structures and landscaping work. Civic officials said the tender process is expected to begin soon, with construction likely to start before the next monsoon season.

Residents of Ekta Nagari and Sinhagad Road have welcomed the move, saying it could provide a lasting solution to annual flooding issues. Local representatives have urged the PMC to complete the work on schedule and ensure transparency in the tendering process. The project is expected to improve not only flood management but also the urban landscape along the Mutha River, making it both safer and more livable.
