Defence Personnel of Dehu Road Undergo Joint Fire-Response Training With PCMC Fire Brigade in Pimpri-Chinchwad
Dehu Road defence personnel join PCMC Fire Brigade in a joint fire-safety drill at Sant Tukaram Nagar; coordinated training to strengthen civil-military emergency response in Pune region.
Pune, 27 November 2025: Sixty defence personnel from the Dehu Road Cantonment recently took part in a comprehensive joint training exercise with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation Fire Brigade (PCMC Fire Brigade), held at the central fire station in Sant Tukaram Nagar, Pimpri-Chinchwad. The session aimed at familiarising military staff with urban firefighting and rescue protocols, boosting coordination between civil and defence responders in emergencies.
During the drill, firefighters demonstrated standard emergency-response procedures and explained the operational structure of civil fire services. Defence personnel were exposed to live mock exercises including fire suppression, rapid-response strategies, and rescue operations. Key firefighting and rescue equipment — from fire tenders and rescue vehicles to hose-reel systems and protective gear — were showcased and handled under expert supervision. This offered the army staff practical insight into urban fire-safety infrastructure rarely encountered in cantonment-based training.
Officials emphasised that while the roles of military and municipal fire brigade differ — one focused on national security, the other on citizen safety — both share a fundamental commitment to public welfare and emergency readiness. Such exercises were described as crucial in fostering mutual respect, improving inter-agency understanding, and ensuring that all response teams operate on the same page during major emergencies.
The initiative aligns with a broader trend of increasing civil-military cooperation in the region. For example, last year a large-scale joint exercise involving the army, municipal fire services, disaster-response forces and police was carried out to sharpen coordinated response to potential fire or disaster incidents. Similar collaborative drills reinforce the value of shared training, enhancing preparedness across agencies.
For the defence personnel, the training offered critical exposure to urban fire-safety challenges: narrow lanes, congested residential zones, and mixed civilian-industrial layouts — all factors that complicate rescue operations in Pune’s expanding urban sprawl. Meanwhile, the PCMC Fire Brigade aims to strengthen coordination with all possible support agencies, including the armed forces, to ensure swift and effective response during large emergencies. Continued civil-military drills may not only improve logistical coordination, but also build trust and streamline communications under pressure.
In light of growing urbanisation and increasing fire-safety risks in fast-developing zones, such combined training efforts could prove vital. Experts working on civil defence and disaster management point out that integrated response systems are key to effective crisis handling — especially in areas where industrial, residential and defence zones coexist.
The successful conduct of the drill at Sant Tukaram Nagar signals intent of both defence and civic agencies to deepen collaboration — preparing not just for routine emergencies, but for larger, unpredictable disasters. As Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad continue to grow, these joint efforts may set a precedent for more formalised civil-military coordination in disaster-response and public safety planning.
