Mumbai ticket examiner busts fake AC local train pass — couple arrested for using AI-generated pass
An AC local train commuter in Mumbai was caught travelling with a forged UTS season pass. Ticket inspector’s vigilance exposed the fraud, leading to the couple’s arrest and renewed warnings against fake tickets
Pune, 28 November 2025: A routine ticket inspection on Mumbai’s AC local service led to the unraveling of a sophisticated ticket-fraud scheme on 26 November 2025, when a vigilant ticket examiner detected a forged UTS season pass — the latest in a growing number of fake-ticket incidents in the city’s suburban rail network.
The passenger, a 28-year-old woman identified as Gudiya Omkar Sharma, was travelling between Kalyan and Dadar when ticket checker Vishal Tukaram Navle asked her to display her pass. Instead of using the official UTS mobile app, she presented a link opened in a web browser and a non-functional QR code — alarming discrepancies that raised suspicion.
A quick verification with Central Railway’s control room confirmed that the pass had expired and was issued months earlier to her husband, 30-year-old engineer Omkar Sharma. Under questioning, the couple admitted to using AI tools to generate the fake pass. Both were detained by the Government Railway Police (GRP) on charges of forgery and cheating under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Railway officials warned commuters that such fraud is punishable by up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both. They urged passengers to buy tickets only through authorised channels — UTS app, counters, or ATVM machines — to avoid legal consequences. The incident underscores growing vigilance as rail authorities intensify checks to clamp down on fake mobile tickets.
