A 57-year-old Pune man has been booked for allegedly ignoring a Maintenance Tribunal’s ₹5,000 monthly order and neglecting his elderly parents.

Pune|05 December 2025: A 57-year-old resident of Kate Vasti in Haveli taluka, Pune, has been booked by Dighi police for allegedly neglecting his elderly parents and ignoring a tribunal-mandated maintenance order. The complaint was lodged by his 82-year-old father, who alleged that although the parents continue to live in the same house as their son and his family, they are forced to depend on neighbours and others for food and daily needs.

According to the father’s complaint, a Senior Citizens Maintenance Tribunal had in December 2023 ordered the son to pay ₹5,000 per month for the upkeep of his mother. Despite the order, the son allegedly failed to pay any amount. In addition, the father claimed that the son pressured them into transferring the ownership of a shop located in Shukrawar Peth — and later removed goods worth nearly ₹25 lakh from that shop without their consent.

Following the complaint, Dighi police registered a case under the relevant provisions of the law designed to protect the welfare of senior citizens. An investigation has begun into the allegations including non-payment of maintenance, possible coercion in transfer of property, and removal of shop inventory. Police said that facts will be verified before further legal action is taken.

This case underscores the growing awareness and enforcement of legal obligations on adult children toward elderly parents under laws intended to safeguard senior citizens’ welfare. Recent years have seen a rise in such cases as more elders turn to tribunals and courts when family support fails.

As the investigation proceeds, questions remain about whether this will lead to prosecution and whether orders for maintenance or restitution will be enforced. For many senior citizens living in urban areas like Pune, this case serves as a reminder of both their legal rights and the responsibilities owed by their children.
