The Union Budget 2026–27 proposes a Pune–Mumbai high-speed rail corridor. Trains will operate at 320 kmph, covering the distance in 48 minutes, easing congestion and boosting Maharashtra’s infrastructure.
New Delhi | 03 February, 2026 – The Union Budget 2026–27 has proposed a high-speed rail corridor between Pune and Mumbai, a major initiative under India’s National Bullet Train Plan. Announcing the plan, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the trains are designed for a maximum speed of 350 kmph with an operational speed of 320 kmph, allowing commuters to cover the Pune-Mumbai distance in just 48 minutes.
The corridor is part of a broader plan to introduce seven high-speed rail routes across India. It will feature standard-gauge tracks, similar to metro systems, with technology and safety systems likely aligned with the ongoing Ahmedabad–Mumbai Bullet Train project.
A total of ₹1.70 lakh crore has been allocated for national railway infrastructure, with ₹24,000 crore earmarked specifically for railway projects in Maharashtra, underscoring the government’s focus on modernizing the state’s transport networks.

Thousands of people travel daily between Pune and Mumbai for work, legal matters, and administrative duties. Commuters and professionals have welcomed the initiative. Youth leader Aniket Dhamale said the high-speed rail would make same-day official visits easier, while advocate Amar Gujar noted that reliable travel would help legal professionals manage court schedules more efficiently.
The proposed corridor is designed to supplement existing road and conventional rail networks, easing congestion and improving travel efficiency. Authorities anticipate it will handle heavy daily passenger traffic more effectively while supporting economic growth and regional connectivity.
The project represents a significant step in India’s push for modern railway infrastructure, offering a faster, safer, and more reliable alternative for Maharashtra’s commuters, while strengthening the country’s high-speed rail capabilities.
