The Maharashtra Economic Survey highlights a sharp rise in English-medium schools across the state, significantly outnumbering Marathi-medium institutions and reflecting changing parental preferences in the education sector.
Mumbai | 6 March, 2026A recent report presented in the Maharashtra Legislature has revealed a significant shift in the state’s education landscape, with English-medium schools far outnumbering Marathi-medium institutions. According to the Maharashtra Economic Survey, the growing preference among parents for English education has contributed to the steady expansion of English-medium schools across the state.

The report states that in the academic year 2024-25, Maharashtra had around 12,991 English-medium self-financed schools, compared to only 2,010 Marathi-medium institutions. In addition, 217 schools operated in other language mediums. The findings indicate a continued trend observed in the previous academic year as well. In 2023-24, there were 12,986 English-medium schools, while Marathi-medium schools stood at 2,035 and other language schools numbered 232.

Overall, the number of self-financed schools in the state has remained above 15,000. Maharashtra recorded 15,253 such schools in 2023-24, which slightly decreased to 15,128 in the following academic year.
The report also provides data on school boards operating in the state. In 2024-25, there were 13,658 schools affiliated with the State Board, 1,260 with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), and 389 schools under other boards such as ICSE, IGCSE and IB. A small number of institutions operate with dual affiliations.
Meanwhile, the state has 38 aided Sainik Schools, including four exclusively for girls. During the academic year 2025-26, these institutions recorded admissions of 11,915 students.

The survey further notes that the number of secondary and higher secondary schools in Maharashtra increased from 28,986 in 2023-24 to 29,641 in 2024-25. Rural schools continue to account for a major share of the education system, comprising about 58.2 percent of the total institutions in the state.
