A Mumbai High Court woman judge lost ₹6.02 lakh in a cyber fraud after calling a fake bank helpline found online. The fraudster sent a malicious app link and obtained credit card details

Mumbai | 09 March, 2026: A woman judge of the Mumbai High Court has fallen victim to a cyber fraud amounting to around ₹6 lakh after contacting a fake bank helpline number found on the internet.

According to police officials, the judge was trying to obtain information about redeeming reward points on her credit card and searched online for the bank’s customer service number. As the official number was not readily available, she dialed a helpline number listed on the internet, assuming it belonged to the bank.

The person who answered the call introduced himself as a representative from the bank’s credit card department and offered assistance in redeeming the reward points. During the conversation, the caller sent an APK file link via WhatsApp and asked the judge to download the application to complete the process.

Since the link could not be opened on her iPhone, the judge reportedly accessed it using the Android phone of her housemaid. After downloading the application, she entered her credit card details as instructed.Shortly afterwards, she received an email notification indicating that around ₹6.02 lakh had been withdrawn from her credit card through four separate transactions. Realising that she had been cheated, the judge immediately blocked the card and reported the incident to the National Cyber Crime Helpline.

A case has been registered at Cuffe Parade police station under relevant sections of the Information Technology Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to hacking and cheating. Investigators have begun tracing the bank accounts used to transfer the fraudulently obtained money and are searching for the accused.

Police have once again urged citizens to rely only on official websites for helpline numbers and avoid downloading unknown applications or sharing financial details with strangers online.
