Maharashtra School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse has reiterated that Marathi will remain a compulsory subject in all schools across the state, warning strict action against institutions violating the rule.

Mumbai | March 14, 2026: Maharashtra School Education Minister Dadaji Bhuse has reaffirmed that Marathi will continue to be a compulsory subject in all schools across the state, including institutions affiliated with national and international education boards. The minister stressed that strict compliance with the state’s language policy is mandatory and warned of action against schools that fail to implement the rule.

Speaking about the existing mandate, Bhuse said that Marathi must be taught as a subject from Classes 1 to 10 in every school operating in the state. The directive applies not only to the state board but also to schools affiliated with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (ICSE), and various international education boards. The minister stated that the government is committed to ensuring that students studying in Maharashtra have a basic understanding of the state’s official language. According to him, learning Marathi is important for preserving the linguistic and cultural identity of the state while also helping students integrate better with the local environment.

Bhuse also warned that strict action would be taken against schools that fail to follow the rule. Authorities may conduct inspections to verify compliance, and institutions found violating the mandate could face penalties. In serious cases, schools may even face the cancellation of their recognition if they continue to ignore the state’s language policy. The state government has urged school managements to strictly adhere to the guidelines and ensure that Marathi is taught as required. Officials said the move aims to promote the language while maintaining uniformity in education policies across Maharashtra
