Former Union Minister Arvind Sawant has urged the government to expedite the doubling of the Konkan Railway line, with the Railway Minister assuring that steps will be taken in a positive direction.
New Delhi | March 17 2026: The demand for doubling the Konkan Railway line was raised in Parliament by Arvind Sawant, who called for urgent action to enhance rail connectivity and capacity along the crucial coastal route.
Highlighting the increasing passenger and freight load on the Konkan Railway, Sawant pointed out that the existing single-line track often leads to delays and limits the overall efficiency of train operations. He stressed that doubling the route would significantly improve connectivity between Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka, while also boosting economic activity in the Konkan region.

Responding to the demand, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured the House that the government is aware of the importance of the project and will take positive steps in this regard. He indicated that the proposal is under consideration and necessary measures will be explored to enhance infrastructure on the route.
The Konkan Railway is considered one of India’s most important and scenic rail corridors, playing a vital role in connecting coastal regions with major cities. However, the single-line track has long been a bottleneck, particularly during peak travel seasons and the monsoon period.

Experts believe that doubling the railway line would not only reduce congestion but also improve safety, increase train frequency and ensure smoother transportation of goods. The project is also expected to support tourism and regional development by providing better connectivity to coastal destinations.
Sawant emphasised that with growing demand for rail services, infrastructure upgrades such as doubling of tracks are essential to meet future needs. He urged the Centre to prioritise the project and allocate necessary funds at the earliest.

The Railway Minister’s assurance has raised hopes that the long-pending demand may soon see progress, bringing relief to passengers and boosting the overall efficiency of rail transport in the Konkan belt.
