Indore EV Charging Horror: Eight Family Members Perish in Massive Overnight Blaze

Indore | : Thursday, June 12, 2026 Tragedy struck early Wednesday near Bengali Square in Indore’s Tilak Nagar when an electric vehicle charging outside a three-storey residence exploded around 3:30 AM, engulfing the Pugalia family home in flames. The fire rapidly spread from the parked EV to the building, where stored LPG cylinders detonated in succession, causing partial structural collapse and trapping victims inside. Police Commissioner Santosh Kumar Singh confirmed eight fatalities, including two children, three women, and three men, with three others critically injured.
Digital locks on room doors reportedly failed to unlock during the power outage, exacerbating the death toll as dense smoke and explosions created chaos. Firefighters battled multiple blasts from 10+ cylinders, controlling the blaze after hours. Initial investigations point to a short circuit at the makeshift charging point as the spark, highlighting risks of overnight home charging without proper electrical safeguards or ventilation.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav labeled the incident “heartbreaking” and ordered an intensive expert probe, alongside drafting Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for EV charging statewide. Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya visited the gutted site, stressing prevention. The family had reportedly been celebrating recent festivities days earlier. This marks one of India’s deadliest EV-related residential fires, raising alarms as electric vehicle adoption surges. Experts urge certified chargers, avoiding flammable storage near charging zones, and professional wiring audits.
