April 4, 2026 | Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has decided to extend the proposed Shaktipeeth Expressway up to the Goa border, expanding the ambitious highway project from Digras in eastern Maharashtra to Bandy near the Goa boundary. The revised plan will increase the total length of the expressway to nearly 856 kilometres, making it one of the longest road infrastructure projects in the state. Sources in the government indicated that the updated alignment has been finalised to improve connectivity between key pilgrimage centres and major districts across Maharashtra, while also strengthening the transport corridor leading towards Goa.

The Shaktipeeth Expressway is being promoted as a major connectivity project that will link several prominent religious destinations and tourist hubs. Officials said the new extension is expected to improve road travel, reduce travel time, and boost regional economic activity through better logistics and smoother movement of goods and passengers. The expressway is expected to provide direct benefits to Satara district, which will fall along the route. However, the revised alignment has reportedly excluded key areas such as Shirol, Hatkanangale, and Kagal, sparking discussions among local representatives and residents who were earlier expecting the project to pass through their regions.

The total cost of the Shaktipeeth Expressway project is estimated to be around ₹15,000 crore. Officials stated that the expressway will be designed with modern standards, focusing on high-speed travel, safety measures, and long-term durability. Land acquisition and detailed planning processes are expected to be taken up in phases. The project is also seen as a strategic infrastructure push, aiming to strengthen Maharashtra’s internal road network and enhance tourism connectivity. The Goa border extension is expected to support tourism-driven travel and improve accessibility for pilgrims as well as commercial transport. With the route stretching from eastern Maharashtra to the Konkan belt, the expressway is expected to become a key corridor for economic growth and regional development. Further details regarding timelines, land acquisition, and execution plans are expected to be announced in the coming months.
