Pune tanker services resume in Undri, Mohammadwadi after 24-hour halt, but residents demand permanent water solution.
April 16, 2026 | Pune: After a tense 24-hour disruption, private water tanker services have finally resumed in Pune’s Undri, Mohammadwadi and NIBM Road areas, bringing temporary relief to thousands of residents who were left struggling without water. However, even as normalcy begins to return, the crisis has once again exposed the fragile and highly dependent water supply system in these fast-growing suburbs.
The sudden halt in tanker operations had created a near-emergency situation across more than 100 housing societies, many of which rely entirely on tanker supply due to the absence of a reliable municipal pipeline network. Residents reported severe shortages, with daily activities like cooking, cleaning and sanitation coming to a standstill. In several societies, water reserves were exhausted within hours, forcing families to purchase bottled water or ration whatever little supply remained.

The disruption was triggered by rising tensions between tanker operators and authorities. In recent days, Pune Traffic Police had intensified action against tanker drivers following multiple safety concerns, including fatal accidents and incidents involving reckless or intoxicated driving. This crackdown led to strong opposition from tanker operators, who eventually suspended services in protest.
The situation escalated quickly, prompting urgent discussions between tanker operators and local authorities. Following a meeting with civic officials, including the mayor, a resolution was reached. Operators agreed to resume services under certain conditions, including the installation of 360-degree cameras in tanker vehicles and mandatory deployment of helpers to improve safety during operations.
With these assurances in place, tanker movement restarted across affected areas, restoring water supply and easing immediate pressure on residents. However, the relief is being seen as temporary rather than a long-term solution.
Residents and civic activists have once again raised serious concerns about Pune’s growing dependence on private tanker services. In areas like Undri and Mohammadwadi, rapid urban development has outpaced infrastructure, leaving thousands dependent on daily tanker deliveries for basic needs. Even a short disruption can bring life to a halt, highlighting the vulnerability of the current system.
Experts and locals alike are now demanding a permanent fix. The primary demand is for the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to accelerate pipeline projects and ensure consistent water supply through civic infrastructure. Ongoing delays in pipeline work and incomplete water distribution systems have been repeatedly cited as the root cause of the crisis.
The recent incident also brings attention to broader issues such as tanker regulation, road safety, and groundwater usage. While stricter enforcement is necessary for safety, the absence of a parallel, reliable public water system continues to create recurring crises.
