Pune-Bengaluru Greenfield Expressway Nears Final Clearance, Travel Time to Be Halved

Pune-Bengaluru Greenfield Expressway is close to final approval, promising faster connectivity, reduced travel time, and a major boost to trade and logistics between Maharashtra and Karnataka.

April 18, 2026 | Pune: The ambitious Pune-Bengaluru Greenfield Expressway project is approaching its final stage of approval, marking a significant milestone in India’s infrastructure development under the Bharatmala Pariyojana. Once cleared, the project is expected to transform connectivity between Maharashtra and Karnataka, cutting travel time nearly in half. The proposed expressway will span approximately 700 kilometres and is designed as a fully access-controlled corridor with six to eight lanes. The estimated cost of the project is between ₹45,000 crore and ₹50,000 crore. Officials indicate that alignment approval is likely soon, following which the process of land acquisition will commence.

Currently, travel between Pune and Bengaluru takes around 14 to 15 hours by road. With the completion of the new expressway, this duration is expected to reduce to nearly seven hours, significantly improving efficiency for both passenger and freight movement.

The route is planned to pass through key districts in Maharashtra, including Satara and Sangli, before entering Karnataka via Belagavi. It will further connect important cities such as Vijayapura and Davanagere before reaching Bengaluru. This strategic alignment is expected to enhance regional connectivity and open up new economic corridors.

Experts believe the project will have a substantial economic impact by boosting trade, logistics, and industrial development. Improved connectivity is likely to encourage the growth of warehousing hubs and attract fresh investments in manufacturing and related sectors across both states.

As infrastructure projects continue to play a crucial role in economic expansion, the Pune-Bengaluru Greenfield Expressway is seen as a key initiative that could reshape transportation dynamics and support long-term growth in the region.
