Pune Police raid Budhwar Peth, detain 15 Bangladeshi nationals in anti-trafficking operation; probe into illegal stay and racket links underway.
Pune, 28 April, 2026: In a major crackdown on illegal activities in Pune’s red-light area, police conducted a late-night raid in Budhwar Peth and detained 15 Bangladeshi nationals suspected to be part of a sex racket. The operation, carried out by teams from the Faraskhana Police Station and Crime Branch, was based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of foreign nationals allegedly staying illegally and being involved in prostitution-related activities.
According to police officials, the raid targeted multiple premises in the densely populated locality, where several individuals were found without valid documentation. The detained persons are currently undergoing verification, and authorities are working to confirm their nationality and immigration status. Similar operations in the past have revealed that many such individuals enter India illegally and are later pushed into prostitution networks operating in the area.

Officials stated that cases will be registered under relevant sections of the Foreigners Act, Passport Act, and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, depending on the outcome of the investigation. Police have also initiated the process of informing central agencies and immigration authorities for further action, including possible deportation.
This is not the first such operation in Budhwar Peth. In recent months, Pune Police have repeatedly carried out raids in the area, uncovering networks involving illegal immigration and human trafficking. In one earlier case, over 20 women were detained, with several identified as Bangladeshi nationals lacking valid documents.
Investigators believe that such rackets often involve cross-border trafficking, where victims are lured with promises of employment and later forced into sex work. Authorities are now probing whether a larger organised network is operating behind the scenes, facilitating illegal entry, shelter, and exploitation.
The latest action has once again highlighted concerns around human trafficking, illegal residency, and the need for stricter monitoring in high-risk zones like Budhwar Peth. Police have assured that similar combing operations will continue to dismantle such networks and ensure stricter enforcement of the law.
The Budhwar Peth raid underscores the ongoing challenge of tackling organised trafficking and illegal immigration in urban centres like Pune. With investigations underway, authorities are expected to focus on identifying the larger network behind the racket while strengthening surveillance to prevent such incidents in the future.
