Pune’s Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar metro launch has been delayed again, missing May deadline. Authorities now plan phased opening from June 15, citing pending civil works and infrastructure-related obstacles along the route

Pune | May 01, 2026: The much-awaited Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar metro corridor in Pune is set to miss yet another deadline, with authorities now planning to begin operations from June 15 instead of the earlier announced May schedule. The delay marks another setback for one of the city’s most important infrastructure projects connecting the IT hub of Hinjawadi with central Shivajinagar.

The metro line, which spans approximately 23 kilometres and includes 23 stations, was initially expected to become operational in March 2025. However, incomplete construction work prevented its launch. Subsequent deadlines, including revised announcements by the state leadership, also could not be met.

Most recently, a May launch was projected, but officials have now confirmed that even this timeline is not feasible due to pending works. The first phase is now expected to cover 12 stations, while the remaining stretch will be opened in the second phase, likely around October.

The project is being developed under a public-private partnership model and is considered crucial for easing traffic congestion between Pune’s IT corridor and core urban areas. Despite its importance, the corridor has faced repeated delays due to technical challenges and infrastructure-related issues.

To expedite progress, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has intensified monitoring of the project. Senior officials have conducted site inspections and issued directives to resolve bottlenecks. During a recent review, officials identified a major water leakage issue near the Savitribai Phule Pune University station area, caused by an existing municipal water pipeline, which is affecting construction work.

Authorities have instructed immediate rectification of the issue and also ordered clearance of space required for metro station staircases and related infrastructure. The project team is now working to resolve these obstacles to ensure the revised deadline is met. The repeated postponement of the metro launch has raised concerns among commuters who have long awaited faster connectivity between Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar, two of Pune’s busiest and most significant zones.
