New Delhi | May 6, 2026: The United States has reportedly begun a major military-led operation named “Project Freedom” in the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, aiming to ensure safe passage for hundreds of commercial vessels currently facing disruption. The development has heightened fears of a fresh confrontation with Iran, as tensions in the region once again show signs of escalation.

According to reports, the US operation is focused on clearing shipping routes and preventing disruptions in one of the world’s most vital maritime corridors for oil and gas transport. The Strait of Hormuz is considered a key global trade route, and any blockade or conflict in the area directly impacts international energy supplies and shipping movement.

However, Iran has strongly rejected the US move and has claimed it is prepared to retaliate against any military intervention. Iranian authorities have reportedly issued warnings against American forces and accused Washington of provoking instability in the region. The situation has led to cautious international reactions, with several nations and global shipping companies closely monitoring the unfolding developments.

Former US President Donald Trump, in a sharp statement, reportedly warned that Iran could face severe consequences, even threatening complete destruction if it attempts any aggressive action. The statement has further added to concerns about rising military rhetoric and the possibility of an armed clash.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that a large number of merchant ships remain stuck due to the tense situation. Nearly 20,000 sailors are believed to be stranded as vessels await clearance and security guarantees. The United States has reportedly deployed additional naval assets, fighter aircraft, drones, and around 15,000 troops near the Oman coastline to strengthen its operational presence.

The growing militarization of the region has raised fears of wider instability across the Middle East, with experts warning that even a small trigger could lead to a larger conflict affecting global trade and fuel prices.

On the political front, the Bharatiya Janata Party has also appointed central observers for key states ahead of upcoming political developments. Sources suggest a possible oath-taking ceremony in West Bengal on May 9, while senior leaders are expected to oversee party responsibilities in Assam and other regions.
