State commission directs Pune civic body to resolve sanitation workers’ housing issues within two months, including ownership rights, faster documentation, and on-site camps to ensure access to welfare schemes.

Pune | 05 May 2026: The Maharashtra State Safai Karmachari Commission has directed the Pune Municipal Corporation to prioritise and expedite resolution of long-pending housing issues faced by sanitation workers in the city. Commission chairperson Shersingh Dagor stated that the civic body has sought a two-month timeframe to address the matter, particularly regarding ownership rights and pending housing allotments.

A review meeting was held at the municipal headquarters involving Mayor Manjusha Nagpure, Municipal Commissioner Nawal Kishore Ram, and senior officials, after which the direction was formally reiterated. Speaking to the media, Dagor emphasised that workers engaged in sanitation services for decades have still not received rightful housing despite multiple government resolutions and welfare provisions.

Officials noted that as per a 2008 government decision, sanitation workers completing 25 years of service are eligible for housing benefits and ownership rights. The commission has instructed that pending housing files be processed on priority and that the transfer of ownership documents be completed in accordance with the relevant provisions of a 1987 legal framework. The aim is to ensure that eligible workers are not left waiting indefinitely for basic residential security.

To speed up implementation, the civic administration and district authorities will conduct special camps directly in sanitation worker settlements. These camps will facilitate on-the-spot verification and completion of documentation so that beneficiaries do not need to repeatedly visit government offices. Authorities have stated that this initiative is intended to reduce procedural delays and improve access to welfare schemes.

Special registration drives are scheduled on May 11, 12, and 13, focusing on housing applications and other welfare benefits. The commission also highlighted educational support schemes, including monthly scholarships for students from Class 1 to 10 and assistance through state welfare bodies for competitive examinations and higher education opportunities, including abroad studies.

Dagor urged that these schemes must reach eligible families without administrative bottlenecks. He acknowledged existing gaps in implementation and stressed the need to bridge the disconnect between policy and ground-level delivery. The commission has indicated that progress will be reviewed within the stipulated timeline to ensure compliance with directives and timely relief for sanitation workers awaiting housing rights.
