May 9, 2026 | New Delhi: The Government of India on Friday appointed Lieutenant General N S Raja Subramani (Retd) as the country’s next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), marking a major transition in the nation’s top military leadership structure. According to an official announcement issued by the Ministry of Defence, Lt Gen Raja Subramani will also serve as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs upon assuming office. He will succeed General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure as CDS concludes on May 30, 2026.

Lt Gen Raja Subramani currently serves as the Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat, a role he has held since September 2025. Before that, he served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff between July 2024 and July 2025 and earlier headed the Army’s Central Command as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief.

A highly decorated officer, Raja Subramani brings more than four decades of military experience across operational, command, and strategic assignments. Commissioned into the 8th Battalion of the Garhwal Rifles in 1985, he has held several significant positions in sensitive operational zones including Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast.

The appointment comes at a crucial time as India continues to focus on strengthening tri-services integration, defence preparedness, and modernization under the CDS framework introduced in 2019. Defence analysts view Raja Subramani’s elevation as a move aimed at ensuring continuity in military reforms and strategic coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

In another major defence reshuffle, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan was appointed as the next Chief of the Naval Staff.
