In a proactive move to address the rising summer temperatures and potential water shortages in rural areas, the Pune District Council has sanctioned a comprehensive ₹35,64,40,000 relief plan for the 2025-26 period

Pune | May 12, 2026: To prevent a drinking water crisis in the rural hinterlands of Pune district, District Council (Zilla Parishad) President Veerdhaval Jagdale approved a quarterly scarcity action plan on Monday. The specialized roadmap, totaling ₹35.64 crore, is designed to be implemented in three phases between October 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026. This administrative foresight follows urgent demands from newly elected members of the Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samitis to secure water resources before the peak of the summer season.

The plan prioritizes long-term resource availability over temporary fixes. A significant portion of the budget ₹1,015.25 lakh has been allocated for the drilling of new borewells and tube wells. Additionally, ₹1,221.51 lakh is earmarked for the special repair of existing piped water supply schemes, while ₹140.17 lakh will be used for maintaining existing borewells. To ensure immediate relief in the most parched regions, the administration has set aside ₹144.50 lakh for water tankers and ₹292.70 lakh for the temporary acquisition of private wells should the situation deteriorate.

Beyond infrastructure, the council is investing ₹724 lakh into strengthening water sources and ₹26.85 lakh for deepening wells and removing silt to increase storage capacity. As several villages have already begun reporting initial signs of water stress, the Zilla Parishad administration emphasized that this early approval of funds will allow local bodies to act swiftly. Officials stated that while the current plan covers immediate requirements, they remain prepared to implement additional contingency measures based on the severity of the heatwave in the coming months.
