Millions of Americans receiving Social Security benefits are set to receive their May 2026 payments this week, with the first batch of deposits scheduled for beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of any month.

Washington, D.C. | May 13: The Social Security Administration (SSA) has started disbursing the first round of Social Security payments for May 2026, providing financial relief to millions of retirees, disabled individuals, and survivor beneficiaries across the United States. Beneficiaries whose birth dates fall between the 1st and 10th of any month are scheduled to receive their payments on Wednesday, May 13, under the agency’s regular payment calendar.

The SSA follows a staggered payment system each month, with benefit payments distributed on different Wednesdays depending on a recipient’s birth date. Individuals born between the 11th and 20th of the month are expected to receive payments on May 20, while those born between the 21st and 31st are scheduled for May 27.

Recipients who started receiving Social Security benefits before May 1997, or those receiving both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), already received their payments earlier this month. Since May 3 fell on a weekend, payments were advanced to May 1.

The Social Security program remains a critical source of income for millions of Americans, including retirees, disabled workers, and survivors of deceased beneficiaries. According to SSA data, maximum retirement benefits in 2026 can reach up to $5,181 per month for individuals who delayed retirement until age 70 and consistently earned at the taxable maximum throughout their careers.

Recent legislative changes have also increased benefits for some recipients. Following the repeal of the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset under the Social Security Fairness Act, several beneficiaries reportedly saw monthly payment increases averaging around $360.
