Apple Brings End-to-End Encryption to iPhone-Android Chats With iOS 26.5 Update
Apple has introduced end-to-end encryption for RCS messaging between iPhones and Android devices with iOS 26.5, significantly improving privacy and security for cross-platform text conversations.
Cupertino | May 12, 2026 | Apple has officially rolled out end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging between iPhone and Android users through its latest iOS 26.5 update, marking a major step towards secure cross-platform communication. The feature, developed in collaboration with Google and the GSM Association (GSMA), enables encrypted messaging between Apple’s Messages app and Android devices using RCS technology. Until now, conversations between iPhone and Android users lacked full encryption protection despite Apple introducing RCS support with iOS 18 in 2024.
With the latest update, messages, photos, videos and other media exchanged through RCS chats will now remain protected from third-party access during transmission. The encryption feature is based on the GSMA Universal Profile 3.0 standard and is expected to enhance user privacy significantly.
According to reports, encrypted conversations will display a lock icon inside the Messages application, allowing users to identify whether a chat is protected. The feature is enabled by default, although both users must have RCS activated on compatible devices and supported carriers for encryption to function properly.
The update effectively narrows the long-standing security gap between Apple’s iMessage ecosystem and Android messaging services. While iMessage has always supported end-to-end encryption between Apple devices, Android-to-iPhone conversations previously relied on standard SMS or partially secured RCS communication.
Technology experts believe the move could reduce dependence on third-party messaging applications such as WhatsApp and Signal for users seeking secure communication across operating systems. The update also retains existing RCS features including typing indicators, read receipts and high-resolution media sharing.
Apple had earlier tested the feature in beta versions of iOS 26.4 before making it publicly available with iOS 26.5. Industry analysts see the rollout as part of broader efforts to modernise global messaging standards and improve interoperability between competing mobile ecosystems.
