New Delhi | May 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the Special Protection Group (SPG) to reduce the size of his official convoy by nearly 50 percent, in a major symbolic move aimed at promoting austerity and fuel conservation during a period of global uncertainty and rising energy concerns. The decision comes amid escalating tensions in West Asia and fears of crude oil supply disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis.

According to reports, the Prime Minister’s move is intended to encourage government departments, ministers, and public representatives to adopt similar cost-cutting and fuel-saving measures. The reduced convoy size is being viewed as part of a broader campaign focused on limiting non-essential expenditure and promoting efficient use of resources during a sensitive economic period.

The austerity push has already started reflecting across several states. In Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reportedly instructed officials to cut VIP vehicle convoys by 50 percent and encouraged the use of public transport, metro services, and virtual meetings wherever possible. Residents were also urged to reduce fuel consumption and avoid unnecessary purchases amid growing global volatility.

The government’s measures come as crude oil prices remain elevated due to geopolitical tensions involving Iran and the broader West Asia region. India, which imports a major share of its crude oil requirements, remains vulnerable to disruptions in global energy supply chains. Rising oil prices could potentially impact inflation, transportation costs, and overall economic stability.

Political leaders and officials from multiple states have reportedly backed the Prime Minister’s austerity appeal, with some ministers voluntarily reducing the use of escort vehicles and official fleets. The initiative is being projected as a message of fiscal discipline and responsible governance during a challenging global economic environment.
