The West Bengal government is likely to take a crucial decision on Dearness Allowance (DA) and salary revisions during its upcoming cabinet meeting scheduled for May 18, offering fresh hope to state government employees and pensioners demanding parity with central government pay structures.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently stated that the state cabinet would discuss pending concerns related to DA and the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission during the meeting. The announcement has generated significant expectations among employee unions, who have been demanding higher allowances for several years.

At present, West Bengal government employees receive 22% DA after the state government announced a 4% increase during the interim budget earlier this year. However, the allowance still remains considerably lower than the DA provided to central government employees, primarily because the state continues to follow the Sixth Pay Commission structure while the Centre operates under the Seventh Pay Commission.

Employee organisations have repeatedly protested over the widening Centre-state pay gap, arguing that rising inflation and living expenses have increased financial pressure on salaried workers and pensioners. The DA issue has also reached the Supreme Court, where matters linked to allowance parity and arrears remain under consideration.

Financial experts believe the Bengal government may opt for a phased increase instead of immediately matching central DA rates, considering the significant financial burden such a move could place on the state treasury. Analysts also note that even if the Seventh Pay Commission is implemented in West Bengal, the upcoming Eighth Pay Commission at the Centre could once again widen the gap in the future.

The proposed discussions come shortly after the newly formed Bengal administration announced several major governance decisions, including welfare scheme continuity, administrative reforms and employment-related measures. Political observers believe the upcoming cabinet meeting could become one of the first major economic tests for the new government.

Government employees and pensioners across the state are now closely watching the May 18 meeting, expecting clarity on DA revisions, salary restructuring and future pay commission implementation plans.
