A severe heatwave has intensified across multiple regions of India, pushing temperatures dangerously high and forcing authorities to issue health advisories as several cities continue to experience extreme summer conditions. Uttar Pradesh’s Banda emerged as the hottest location in the country on Thursday after recording a blistering 48 degrees Celsius, marking the season’s highest temperature so far.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), states including Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh are currently facing prolonged heatwave conditions, with temperatures remaining significantly above normal levels. The national capital also witnessed intense heat, with mercury levels hovering around 45 degrees Celsius in several areas.
Weather experts have attributed the rising temperatures to dry northwesterly winds, delayed pre-monsoon activity and persistent high-pressure systems over northern India. Officials warned that the ongoing heatwave could continue over the next few days before isolated rainfall activity brings temporary relief in some regions.
The soaring temperatures have started affecting daily life, power demand and public health. Hospitals in several states have reported a rise in heat exhaustion, dehydration and heatstroke-related complaints, particularly among elderly citizens, outdoor workers and children. Authorities have advised people to avoid direct sun exposure during afternoon hours and remain hydrated.
In Delhi and neighbouring regions, power consumption has also surged due to increased usage of air conditioners and cooling systems. Civic authorities have begun setting up water stations and emergency medical response units in crowded public areas to manage heat-related emergencies.

Meanwhile, farmers in parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh are expressing concerns over the impact of extreme temperatures on crops and water availability. Experts say prolonged heatwaves could also affect groundwater reserves and increase the risk of forest fires in vulnerable regions.
The IMD has urged residents in affected states to closely follow official advisories as India continues to battle one of the harshest summer spells of the year.
