Amidst growing internal dissent, 12 Trinamool Congress Members of Parliament are allegedly negotiating with the Bharatiya Janata Party, posing a massive political crisis for West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
May 27, 2026 | Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is reportedly grappling with severe internal unrest. Political circles are abuzz with speculation that approximately 12 of the party’s 29 Lok Sabha MPs are preparing to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). If realized, this defection would present an unprecedented challenge for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
According to highly placed sources, alongside the 12 MPs already communicating with the BJP, backdoor talks are progressing with five to six additional parliamentarians. To successfully bypass the anti-defection law, orchestrators are strategically attempting to consolidate a breakaway faction of at least 19 to 20 MPs.

The impending crisis has reached the TMC high command, prompting immediate efforts to maintain unity. Strikingly, potential defectors allegedly include close loyalists of both Mamata Banerjee and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Internal friction has reportedly brewed over organizational functioning and the influence of the political consultancy firm I-PAC. Currently, no official party reactions have been released.
For the BJP, which holds 240 Lok Sabha seats and relies on coalition partners, inducting these parliamentarians would significantly bolster its legislative strength and reduce dependency on allies. The party is also reportedly eyeing potential defectors within the Rajya Sabha.

Adding fuel to the speculation, senior TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and several MLAs recently attended an administrative meeting convened by Suvendu Adhikari. Defending her presence, Ghosh Dastidar stated that administration belongs to everyone. Her recent removal from the Lok Sabha chief whip position and resignation as Barasat district president have only intensified rumors of her departure.
