Sugar Export Ban Deepens Financial Crisis for Maharashtra Mills

May 29, 2026 | Satara: The sugar industry and sugarcane farmers in Maharashtra are facing a severe economic crisis due to the Central Government’s ongoing ban on sugar exports. With domestic production remaining high, the export restrictions have led to a massive surplus of sugar within the domestic market, driving down prices and directly squeezing the financial operations of sugar mills across the state.

The crisis is further intensified because the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar has remained stagnant for the past seven years, putting a strict cap on the mills’ revenue. Conversely, operational costs including electricity, fuel, labor, transportation, and maintenance have risen consistently, leaving many factories under immense financial strain and struggling to balance their books.

During a recent event in Satara attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Public Works Minister Shivendraraje Bhosale and Guardian Minister Shambhuraj Desai raised the issue, urging the central leadership to immediately increase the base price of sugar. Local farmer leaders, including Swabhimani Shetkar Sanghatana District President Raju Shelke, have vehemently demanded an immediate lift on the export ban, calling the current policy detrimental to both mills and growers.

Industry experts warn that the weakening financial health of these factories will directly delay the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) payments owed to farmers. With rising production costs already burdening cultivators, any delay in these crucial payments threatens to disrupt the stability of the entire rural economy.
