Pune Rural Police have dismantled an illegal sex determination racket operating via portable ultrasound machines, arresting key suspects and identifying several medical professionals potentially involved in the widespread illicit network
Pune| June 4, 2026: A major investigation by the Pune Rural Police has revealed a sprawling illegal sex determination and abortion racket that has been operating across Pune and neighboring districts for the past five years. Following a tip-off and the recovery of incriminating video evidence by the health department, police launched a targeted operation that led to the arrest of the primary accused, Annasaheb Giri, a resident of Kedgaon, Daund. The investigation has uncovered that Giri, who holds only a 12th-grade education and had previously worked as a medical representative, was operating a sophisticated illicit service without any formal medical qualifications.

According to Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandipsing Gill, Giri utilized portable sonography machines to conduct unauthorized gender determination tests in villages, charging families between 40,000 to 60,000 rupees per test. The investigation indicates that the racket’s scope is far larger than initially anticipated, with thousands of illegal tests and subsequent abortions conducted over the last five years. Technical analysis of Giri’s mobile communications and financial records has placed 12 to 15 doctors under the police radar. Investigators believe these medical professionals facilitated the racket by referring patients to specific clinics for abortions after illegal gender determination was confirmed.

The police have officially registered cases under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act against Giri and several identified medical practitioners, including Dr. Narendra Thackeray, Mandar Mali, Dr. Atul Ankush Jadhav, and Sundaram Kadam. As the investigation intensifies, authorities are currently analyzing bank transactions and call detail records to map the full extent of the network. Police are also in the process of identifying and interviewing women who underwent these illegal tests, while warning that families who knowingly participated in the practice may also face legal action. This operation marks a significant crackdown on systemic medical malpractices in rural Maharashtra, as officials vow to dismantle the criminal nexus completely.
