The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared the elevation of senior IPS officer Mahesh Dixit as the new Director of the Intelligence Bureau. He will take over from Tapan Kumar Deka, a 1988-batch officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, who has led the agency since 2022 after receiving two extensions.

Dixit, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, was serving as Special Director in the Bureau before his promotion. He holds a medical degree alongside his law enforcement career and brings nearly three decades of experience within the agency, having overseen sensitive portfolios spanning the Northeast, Ladakh, and anti-Naxal operations. A major portion of his service was spent in Jammu and Kashmir, where he headed the Bureau’s Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau unit in Srinagar.

Officials describe Dixit as one of the organisation’s most seasoned hands in intelligence gathering and internal security, with a strong record in counter-terrorism work. His assignments have reportedly included countering Pakistan-backed infiltration networks, tracking radicalisation trends, and addressing threats tied to Left-Wing Extremism.

The order granting the extension cited relevant civil service rules that allow the government to retain top intelligence and security officials beyond the usual retirement age in the public interest. Dixit is expected to formally take charge of the Bureau around June 30, when Deka’s term concludes.

The Intelligence Bureau, functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs, remains India’s principal domestic intelligence agency, tasked with counter-intelligence, counter-terrorism, and internal security operations in coordination with central and state agencies. Dixit’s appointment comes as the government continues to emphasise border infiltration control and internal security stability.
