Mass Fish Deaths, Blackened Water Raise Pollution Concerns in Ambegaon Village
Hundreds of fish were found dead in a well and check dam in Ambegaon taluka after water turned black and contaminated, prompting demands for an investigation into suspected industrial pollution.

July 7, 2026 | Avsari Budruk, Pune District: Environmental concerns have intensified in Avsari Budruk village of Pune district’s Ambegaon taluka after a large number of fish were found dead in a well and a nearby check dam, with residents alleging that untreated industrial wastewater may have contaminated the water source.
The incident occurred at the Samrai check dam and the adjoining well located in the village’s Khalcha Wavar area. Villagers reported that the well water had turned completely black, while a thick green layer had formed on the surface of the check dam. Numerous dead fish were seen floating in the water, raising fears over possible pollution and its impact on public health.
According to local residents, a nearby agricultural produce processing unit is suspected of releasing untreated chemical-laden wastewater into the stream feeding the check dam. Villagers claim the discharge has been taking place without adequate treatment, resulting in severe water contamination. They have demanded a detailed scientific investigation to determine the exact cause of the fish deaths and identify those responsible.

The issue is not new for the village. A similar incident involving mass fish deaths was reported in March this year. At the time, the Gram Panchayat had directed the concerned processing unit to implement corrective measures. However, residents allege that the instructions were ignored, leading to the recurrence of the problem.
Gram Sevika Kavita Kotawal confirmed that the local administration had inspected the site and prepared a preliminary report. Water samples have been collected by the Health Department for laboratory testing. Officials also observed a pipeline allegedly connected to the nearby processing unit discharging into the stream, which will be examined as part of the inquiry.

Residents have warned that if immediate corrective action is not taken, they will approach the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and the National Green Tribunal seeking strict action against those responsible for the alleged environmental damage. Authorities are awaiting the laboratory analysis before determining further legal and administrative action.
